My Day with Chris

I sang Warren Zevon lyrics with this man today.

Yeah, Chris Berman is my buddy.  Or, at least today he was.

Berman came to town today as the keynote speaker for I-Day — an insurance convention that bills itself as the largest and oldest in the country.  The event is put on by The Insurance Club of Buffalo (ICOB).

Sen. Bill Bradley

One of my many hats is as the Legal Counsel for ICOB.  As such, I get to pal around with celebs at I-Day.  Last year, Bill Bradley was my buddy for a day.

Chris Berman was a natural fit for this year’s event.  He honestly loves Buffalo.  Even though he is from Connecticut, he has a real soft spot in his heart for this town, and particularly for the Buffalo Bills.

Today, Berman told the crowd of 1,300 that he has a fondness for old AFL teams — like the Bills.  This goes back to when his father would take him to Jets games, pre-NFL merger.

Additionally, as a young ESPN host in 1988, Berman picked an underdog Bills team to win the Superbowl.  Although they didn’t go all the way, the Buffalo team defied all expectations and went well into the playoffs, making Berman look like a football genius.

Chris pointed out several other examples of kindness that the Bills have shown him over the year.  Add to that Chris’ close friendship with former quarterback, Jim Kelly, as well as the fact that Bills’ owner, Ralph Wilson, asked Berman to introduce him during his NFL Hall of Fame induction.

“It’s good to be home,” said the guy who has never lived here.

There is a little magic going on here in Buffalo.  Chris Berman gets it.  He is the first one to state that the rap about Buffalo as nothing more than the snow capital is nonsense.

The question is: does Berman consider me his buddy?

Probably not.  But let’s just say that if Chris Berman gets arrested tonight in Buffalo, I know which lawyer is getting a call.

The one with whom he sang “Send lawyers, guns and money” all day.
